rifle cartridges are normally much more powerful than handgun cartridges, and power does result from more powder which translates to more gases (higher pressures) and higher velocities. of course, handgun cartridges like .500 S&W mag and .454 Cassul pack a fair wallop, but you will deliver more damage if you can charge your power head with a .30 '06, .300 Win Mag. or any other high power rifle cartridge. the .223 Rem. is a medium power rifle cartridge that will outperform most handgun cartriges.

even amongst hunters and combat shooters is the debate of light and fast bullets vs. heavy and slower bullets, and the terminal effects and trajectories of both. the nice thing about power heads is that you don't need to worry about bullet trajectories. so one option would be to go with heavier bullet so that a deeper wound channel would allow the gases to expand in a greater area. on the other hand, a lighter bullet might deliver a more concentrated amount of gases and pressure in a more shallow would channel, kind of like a one knuckle punch. honestly, although i have my own hunch, i don't know which would be more effective.

a 20 ft. tiger shark is a big animal, and i pray that if any of you need to take one on, that you win the fight.

I Have never carried a power head but have had the unfortunate experience of having to shoot a very big aggressive tiger shark with my speargun about 8 years ago while diving off Huelo Maui. I had heard prior that they were very thick skinned and hard to penetrate. I chose to take a shot at the gill plates from a little ways behind the shark and that definitely did the trick. Thats my suggestion if you find yourself in a dangerous situation with a shark and no powerhead. If anyone out there knows KB Vitterelli ask him about that day he was there.

New to this site...and I don't own or use a powerhead, but in answer to the question of Rifle vs. Pistol...the rifle cartrige will always be a better choice...and if you can use one with a good punch and small diameter bullet(less space=higher velocity) like one of the following: .223/.270/7mm Rem. Mag, you will knock the **** out of your target! BTW for those of you who know me the answer is YES I am still stuck in afghanistan  and our .223's (m16) do a good job on Taliban soldiers anyway. Later ,Eli
