if a roi has ciguatera, would it be safe to use it as fertilizer, or would it affect the cleanliness of the plants that I am growing?

Well since cig potentially can move up the food chain? I would refrain from using it on plants you intend on eating, or smoking.  Just to be on the safe side!

I think the toxin comes from fish/animals that ingest the dinoflatulance that produce the toxin. Typically, I think this is mostly reef fish that feed on the seaweed that they're on -- it's not the seaweed that is toxic, it's the little stuffs that's on it. So I would guess that land plants fertilized with toxic fish wouldn't pull up the toxin from the ground, but that's just my guess. The toxin sounds like it concentrates itself in the fatty tissue of the fish. Interesting question though -- what happens to the toxin in the ground? Does it just stay there? If a lot goes into the dirt, will it seep down to the watertable? Or does the sun's UV light degrade it? If it does, maybe we can render the toxin harmless by treating it with a zap of UV.

:| Now that is an interesting question...I'm guessing "Hawaiian Sunshine" and chemicals within the volcanic-soil, breaks-down the ciguatera (splng.) toxins, and neutralizes it... :) :? Then again....what do I know...
