Just take it easy! Don't go out further than both of you are comfortable.
Yes! You need a float and a flag that must be within 100' of both of you. Don't try too hard to get something, just focus on relaxing, and getting comfortable in the water.

Make sure you stay away from active boat ways. Make sure the area you guys choose doesn't have large surf.

Remind your brother that the fish look bigger underwater then they really are.

Try and search up "boogie board float" or something similar on here and I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to find some stuff that might help you to set one up.

By the way, you might want to use a kui (stringer) instead of a fish bag because it'll have less drag and also because it's easier to secure a fish that way instead of trying to shove it into a bag.

Make sure you know the rules and regulations!

Get rash guards so it will protect you from sunburns and jellies. also buy a dive flag from Hanapaa or Maui sporting goods.
Check this out also.
http://www.808jellyfish.com/

You should try and find some divers who will let you guys tag along.

The Kui you'd attach it to the board.
Where are you guys located? If you're out westside I can help you set your rigs up, and maybe hook you up with some extra stuff I got laying around.
You can PM me if you'd like?

Good pair of gloves are a must also! It helps to hold on to the spear and protects your hands from the sharp parts of the fish, and reef.

Two Noobs don't equal an experienced diver. If you both would like, I would be very happy to have you join us on a dive this Sunday. There is tons of great info on here, but nothing replaces experience. Your first and every experience diving should be one you enjoy safely. And though I cannot promise you'll shoot a fish, I can promise you a safer diving experience that you both would have going out just the two of you. If you want to roll this Sunday morning hit me up with a pm.

Peace!

Total should be around $20 for flag, flag pole, and kui. There's a Hanapa'a on Dillingham.

I was in your shoes a couple of months ago. Try to hook up with some of the divers here, but if you guys do go out on your own, play it very safe. You'll have a lot of time to go deeper or stay out longer. It's a lot safer to tag along with someone more experienced, especially for the first time.

Do's and Don'ts for 3prong
Treat it like a loaded weapon; aim only at what you intend to shoot.
If your 3prong doesn't have grip tape (and even if it does), be aware of where your partner is. 3prongs can be slippery. It's best to have it pointed in a safe direction if it does slip.
