saturday i went diving outside kahala with my cousin's friend, Chris. i had a kala and a good sized pananu on my float. i was working a pile of fish a little ways away from my float when chris called me over and told me my fish were gone. we headed straight in, and when we got to the shallows, i saw that my steel cable kui was severed. luckily, Chris still had his fish (it might have been because he was using a body kui, haha. not sure if it was a good idea or bad idea). we never saw what kind of shark it was, but he said he'd been chased in by a 7-8 foot gray reef before at the same spot. i've seen sharks before, nothing big, but this was the first time i've lost fish to one.

then on sunday i went diving near diamond head with my bro and a couple other friends. i had 3 uhu on my float and kept checking up on them cause i never like get taxed again. well, it so happened that as i was swimming back to the float to check on the fish, one of my friends was also approaching the float. then he started pointing at something. i didn't see anything at first, but he kept pointing so i looked again. then i saw it. a gray reef shark (at least i'm pretty sure that's what kind it was) about 6-7 feet long circling the float. fortunately, he wasn't that aggressive and only came about 20 feet from us. we just kept pointing our guns at it and started swimming in with the fish in hand. close call, but this time we got our dinner!

Yeah, I've seen sharks a few times there, but only got taxed once. There are a few white tips, two to five feet long, and I've seen a 6 ft grey Galapagos? from a distance. Funny thing is, he seems to follow that evening sunset cruise boat that comes out of Waikiki. I've seen him two times when that boat was cruising by, and he always stays just at the edge of visibility. The white tips are much bolder, coming within about five feet on a murky day. I wouldn't use a body kui there...

I seen that shark off Kahala before. He ate my fish while I wasn't looking too. I dont like the sneaky behind your back sharks. I prefer just a little more aggressive shark, one that will face off with me so I can chase him away fair & square. I don't like being sneaked up on from behind or the real aggressive super curious ones either.
