I have a custom made enclosed track wood spear gun. Its a great gun, but Ive discovered a crack in the lamination by the screw holes for the line guide. Its small but i dont wanna make it worse so im down a gun for now.

Anyone know how to fix this? Any advice would be great.
Thanks

Josh

You have any pictures? More then likely it's just a matter of putting some epoxy.

Hop on google. I have seen several builders that repair cracked lams.

If the crack goes through both screw holes than it probably means that the holes were not pre drilled large enough for the screws used. The screws are now acting like a wedge in between the two laminates. With out knowing more (pictures would help) I would suggest cleaning the split best you can, maybe even re-insert the screws to open up the split just a bit, clean with denatured alcohol or acetone and let dry. get some two part epoxy and use a needle or what ever you can put in the crack to spread the epoxy, warming the epoxy may help to make it flow a little better, just put it in a plastic bag and submerge in warm water, take care not to get water on any of your work surfaces. Once you have a good amount of epoxy in the crack back out the screws and clamp until you see a bit of epoxy squeeze out of the crack. Clean off any drips or squeeze and let dry over night.

Once epoxy is dry, re-drill the holes for the screws, make sure the bit is as big as the shank of the screw and the only thing beyond the bit are the threads.

Hope this makes sense, good luck

Jake

If it's a matter of the wood splitting because the screw hole was too small? Depending on the size of the split? Then you can just oil it; and monitor it, to see if it progresses. When you say "line guide"? Do you mean the line guide at the muzzle???

If so? How did you notice the split? If it's extending beyond the base plate of the "line Guide" then you may need to take care of it A.S.A.P.

But agian it is very difficult to make a good assesment of your issue without actually seeing a picture.

You stated that the gun was a custom build?? I'd recommend that you contact the builder. Most decent builders will fix lam seperation for FREE!

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for your advice.
It was built on Kauai, but I'm in Hilo and wont be heading there for at least another year.
What i think I'm gonna do is just brush on some clear marine epoxy over the split so it'll seep in, and just vice grip the crap out of it. If it continues to split after that a friend of mine told me to drill through the stock and bolt it after its epoxied.
