Gene Higa 3-Prong Winners

Charles Ah Nee/ Levi Archuleta

Previous to the 4th Annual Gene higa Memorial Spearfishing Tournament, it had been about eight months since my last dive. A good Braddah of mine (Underground Shorecaster) had a friend, Levi Archuleta, looking for a partner for the contest. I was overwhelmed when I got asked, but I couldn’t turn him down. It was my first contest and I usually dive only to put food on the table. Luckily there was a 3-prong event because I don’t even own a speargun.

Making a long story short, on the day of the event the water was beautiful. We didn’t really do any scouting so we ended up diving some random spot with noone around. We checked some nenue holes and landed a good-sized kumu (thanks to my partner). As we went further out, I landed another kumu and strung it on our kui. When I turned around there they were, 3 kagami uluas. It was about 20-30 ft of water. I dove down about 15ft. but the kagamis began to head off. I continued to descend quickly and, to my surprise, they spun around to check me out.

The first 2 kagamis passed me just out of range. The last one was a little more curious and got to taste some cold steel. My 8’ graphite hit right behind it’s pectoral fin. In a flash the kagami took off about 15-20 yards until it started spiraling to the bottom. The ulua slammed into the reef kicking furiously. I dove down, shoved the spear through, stuck my hand in it’s gills, and the rest is history.

I’m just so glad to be a part of an event dedicated to one of the greatest 3-prong divers in the world. Aloha Gene Higa.

Thanks to everyone at Hana Pa’a and Hawaii Sin Diver for making this event possible. Till the next dive……
