Alii Holo Kai Newsletter February 2009
Thursday, February 5th, 2009TAKO HUNT JANUARY 2009 THE FIRST EVENT FOR THE NEW YEAR!
For the 2 weeks before the scheduled Tako hunt there were about 35 interested divers either signing up or contemplating diving on Sunday. However 4 days before the meet the weather acted up and the weather men on all TV stations painted gloomy, rainy adverse weather conditions. However 18 divers held out and once again the weather predictors were incorrect and we enjoyed a great event. See the photo of the happy faces of the winners.
The winds were light northerly and the surf was down, especially on the South side of Oahu. Only 3 takos can be weighed for the heaviest category and a minimum of 2 pounds for any tako to be considered in all categories. There is no scooping and the adjusted results were:
George Matsuda 1st place Total weight with 11.76 lbs. followed by 2nd place Bronson Oka. Largest category 1st Robert Palakikio 4.11 lbs followed by 2nd place Vann Oshiro. Longest went to Landon Oka 36.5” with Len Manley 2nd at 33.5”. The mystery fish went 1st to Chad Obara’s Kala and 2nd Roland Miguel‘s Roi followed 3rd with Vann Oshiro’s Nenue.
Chili, Hot Dogs, Macaroni Salad and cold drinks was plentiful and although the numbers were small, a lot of stories were told. Also missed was Terrence T who was really under the weather, but Terry Yoneshiro and Lance Ohara filled in.. we thank all for their support and help and the contributions of prizes and the donations of Tako’s to Dennis n Hanako Okada’s grand daughter’s 1st birthday, Mahalo!

This is a short family outing type tournament. Good time to talk shop, perhaps discuss fishing in general, the upcoming US Nationals and get to know your fellow club members. IMPORTANT We need to know how many may be coming so we can plan accordingly. Terrence Takahata will be coordinating this outing. Please call him 836-5009 deadline is March 1st Sunday. . So give Terrence a call, leave a message, let him know you and how many others are coming.! VERY IMPORTANT that we have a close estimate. ! We look forward to seeing you there!
Underwater Society of America 2009 US Nationals will be at Leo Carrillo State Beach, Malibu – Los Angeles County, California. This years Nationals is being hosted on Thursday, August 6, 2009 by GLACD (Greater Los Angeles Council of Divers). Details can be seen from the bid on AliiHoloKai.com web site or check with one of the AHK executive committee to obtain a copy. The rules allow Men’s, women’s and mixed teams and AHK can send up to 3 teams in each category. We will be able to send the 3 men’s teams, however, we are trying to confirm the level of interest especially in the women’s and mixed divisions to insure there will be sufficient teams participating.
Currently AHK Elimination to qualify for 2009 Nationals will be Sunday April 26 with a backup date of Sunday, May 3rd if weather conditions warrant a change. The location is Waialee Beach park (Gene Higa Memorial site) with a possible alternate site that may be determined on meet morning. Divers are encouraged to dive in pairs (safety). Three person team may register/enter as a team and if they are in the top 9 will qualify as AHK entrants. Divers who are possibly interested in diving the elims, should contact Terrence or Frank and let us know. It is also helpful if you state your level of intent to go to the U S Nationals ( even if you are undecided or definitely will not attend). Your input will help us better manage the eliminations and sending AHK Hawaii representation to the Nationals. To participate, you must be a member of AHK, and the Underwater Society of America. We want to insure AHK divers are properly registered and provided with the necessary logistics and information. We want to help you, the AHK Hawaii diver, to be more prepared and competitive.
The elimination meet is planned for 5 hours.
Tentative rules allow 12 fish maximum with 6 knives.
Measurements: Horn Kala 15” / Opelu Kala 17” / Pualu, Palani, Nenue, Aawa, Roi, Goats 12” /Uhu 13”/ Blue Water, Awa, Jacks, Kaku, Uku 18”
