Alii Holo Kai Newsletter December 2008

MELE   KALIKIMAKA & HAUOLI  MAKAHIKI  HOU !

GREETINGS AND BEST WISHES for a safe and productive 2009 from your AHK board. This is the final newsletter for the year 2008.

The Kumu Hunt and Poki Contest held in November was the last club outing for the year.  In a word, the weather was “ugly” for the few days before the meet, but cleared somewhat on Kumu day.  However weather and diving conditions was still a factor and comments such as  “waves were up,” “water dirty all over” was heard at the weigh in.  Regardless, there were 33 divers that registered to participate—and only 3 did not dive.

AWARDS:

Derrick Okamoto came in 1st
Place largest Kumu… 2.64 followed by Roland Miguel 2nd place 1.25
Total weight went 1st Wayde Hayashi 3.93 and Kalehi Fernandez 2nd place and largest Ponuhunuhu went to Travis Kashiwas 4.25…
Jason Hijirida 1st in the Papio division and
Len Manley 1st in the Toao         1.81
2nd Jarin Luke and 3rd to Bryan Oato..

Others that caught eligible fish were Kimi Werner, Chris Visoria and David Sakoda,

The remainder of the divers did not catch any eligible fish and although not listed, can be seen in the traditional “Banana Photo.”

The 8-course Chinese Banquet was excellent and plentiful, especially the steamed Kumu and the sweet sour Uhu and Mu.  The awards were presented to the winners, and there were lots of door prizes, including many turkeys, and everyone got something..

Thanks to all that donated prizes, and those who cleaned fish, and otherwise joined together for good fellowship

Poki Contest:  Prior to Weigh In.
1st place Winner– Kimi Werner
2nd  — Terrence Takahata

The January 2009 outing is the traditional Tako Hunt  Sunday January 18th.
A recap of the info/rules follows in case some of you misplaced your last newsletter.

YOU GET TO DIVE WHERE EVER YOU WISH ON THE ISLAND OF OAHU, ANYTIME AFTER SUNRISE… AND YOU MUST BE AT FRANK’S HOUSE BY 2PM OR DQ. This is a 3 prong – “swim out” event. As you know we schedule this tako hunt as the first event to start the New Year to help reactivate your skills and reaction to moving targets after you probably celebrated a wee bit too much during the holidays.
The minimum eligible octopus weight is 2 pounds, and no scooping in the tako categories.  Tako awards are 3 places for each category: 1st. Total weight (3 largest), 2nd Heaviest (single tako), and 3rd  (longest tako).    A special award will be given for the heaviest mystery fish caught with a 3-prong and must be one of the following:  12” minimum = any of the goats, aawa, awaawa, mu, enenui, roi, toau, uhu.  16” minimum =
opelu kala, horn kala.  18” minimum = All blue water fish, awa, uku, jack family.
Look carefully at the list – and as this is a fun meet you can have only 1 each of the above at the table or face a DQ in the “fish” category.  After all the fish is on the table, a drawing will determine the species and the person with the heaviest wins!
This meet is open to all interested persons – AHK and non-members may join in!!  Start time is after sunrise Sunday and be at Frank’s by 2 PM. Application $15 nonrefundable Entry fee if registered/paid by January11th @ 5 PM.  Otherwise the entry fee is $20.  Mail in the fee and enclosed register to da Treasurer, Terrence Takahata, or drop off at Franks house. Terry Yonashiro will get the awards and the club at the weigh in will provide food.  See you on Sunday January 18th, 2009!

P.S.  We have a mini-request for TAKO by “Gramma” Hanako for her precious little Tanner’s 1st birthday.

DUES are due as we approach the New Year.  You may mail your fee anytime to our most dedicated treasurer Terrence Takahata @ 5210 Likini Road #404 / Honolulu, Hi / 96818.  Make check out to Alii Holo Kai … in these tough economic times it’s still a bargain @ $30 Single and $40 family plan, which
Traditionally includes the CHRISTMAS banquet for FREE!

February will be 3-Prong meet.  The location has not been determined. Let us know if you have a specific general area or open to all Oahu.  At the same time let us know your interest to compete in US Nationals for 2009, Malibu. This is not necessarily a firm commitment on your part but only gives us a starting point for our planning. Call   Terrence 8365009, Dennis 6779010 or Frank 7321756.
